Traffic Control Course - New Entrant

RIIWHS205E

The Traffic Control course (RIIWHS205E - Control Traffic with a Stop/Slow Bat, RIICOM201E - Communicate in the workplace & RIIWHS201E - Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures) covers how to perform Traffic Control - Stop/Slow duties.

Introduction:

A Traffic Controller is a person accredited under the Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme, and authorised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland (TMR), to control traffic with a stop/slow bat. The Traffic Controller provides direction and signals to traffic on how to safely move through, past or around a site using hand signals and their stop/slow bat. The sites may include the following:

  • Roadwork sites where a road closure or part road closure is necessary, or
  • Other events on the road where a road closure or part road closure is necessary (construction projects, major sporting events, fun runs, etc), or
  • Other circumstances where traffic control is required on a roadway, as per TMR requirements

Please be advised TMR have several information sheets for people who are looking to complete the traffic control course. These information sheets describe certain pre-requisites, as required by TMR, that participants must meet in order to be eligible for a traffic control licence, after the successful completion of the whole course. We have placed links to them below for you to download and read.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Prerequisites
• Participants must hold a General Construction Induction Card (White Card) or equivalent prior to enrolling in this course – for those who do not currently have this card, AATC White Card course information can be found here.
• Participants must also have held an approved drivers licence, either provisional or open.
• Have own transport or available transport, to enable participants to travel to complete the 20hr vocational placement. Public transport is not always available for early start times or the locations where participants may be placed to complete their 20 hours vocational placement.
• It is desirable that participants be able to communicate well and have sound literacy skills.
• It is a requirement of TMR that Traffic Controllers renew their Industry Authority every 3 years. This is done by completing a  renewal course, and then reapplying for an Industry Authority with TMR.

Duration:
Eight (8) hours (approx) theory twenty (20) hours of onsite practical experience (please note: the twenty (20) hours of onsite practical experience is not paid work)

Theory:
Face-to-face theory is approximately eight (8) hours for both theoretical and simulated practical component. The assessment is open book and will be completed gradually in stages as the day progresses.

Practical (Industry Placement):
Participants must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of practical experience at roadwork sites under the direct supervision of an experienced, accredited traffic controller.  In line with this, participants are required to sign a ‘Placement Contract’ with Acquired Awareness Training Centre and either Acquired Awareness Traffic Management or the Learner’s place of employment (if Learner’s employer provides Traffic Control Services).  Participants are required to attend placement hours and complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours within the timeframe specified in the Placement Contract (currently 90 days from course commencement).

Award Issued
On successful completion of the theory component and simulated practical exercise participants are issued with a Statement of Attendance upon request.

Participants will then need to successfully complete their 20 hours of onsite practical experience and be assessed by a trainer from AATC, before they are issued with a Statement of Attainment in the following units:  RIIWHS205E – Control Traffic with Stop/Slow Bat, RIICOM201E - Communicate in the workplace & RIIWHS201E - Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures.

Once participants receive their Statement of Attainment for the course they will have to apply at a TMR Customer Service Centre for a Traffic Control Licence. Holding the Statement of Attainment RIIWHS205E – Control Traffic with Stop/Slow Bat, RIICOM201E - Communicate in the workplace & RIIWHS201E - Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures, is NOT a Traffic Control Licence (Industry Authority) in QLD.

There is an additional fee (approximately $245) payable to the QLD Dept. TMR upon application for a three (3) year Traffic Controller Industry Authority (a base fee and a criminal history check fee – these costs are set by the  QLD Dept. TMR.)
