| Who is this course for? |
A Traffic Controller is a person accredited under the Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme and authorised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland (TMR), to control traffic with a stop/slow bat. The Traffic Controller provides direction and signals to traffic on how to safely move through, past or around a site using hand signals and their stop/slow bat. The sites may include the following:

| What do I need to know before I enrol? |
Please be advised TMR have several information sheets for people who are looking to complete the traffic control course. These information sheets describe certain prerequisites as required by TMR, that learners must meet in order to be eligible for a traffic control industry authority, after the successful completion of the whole course. | What are the benefits of completing this course? |
| Successful learners will be able to seek work in the traffic management industry as a traffic controller who can do stop/slow. Note: Learners who wish to put out signage and devices in QLD above those specific to stop/slow duties, would need to complete the Traffic Management Implementation Course as the Traffic Control Course only allows successful learners to place out signs specific to their role completing stop/slow. |
| How will the course be delivered? |
| Face-to-face delivery Theory: The face-to-face theory is approximately eight (8) hours for both theoretical and simulated practical components. The assessment is open book and will be completed gradually throughout the day. There are 2 simulation exercises at the end of the day. Practical (Industry Placement): Learners must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of practical experience at roadwork sites under the direct supervision of an experienced, accredited, Qld traffic controller. In line with this, learners are required to sign a ‘Placement Contract’ with Acquired Awareness Training Centre and either Acquired Awareness Traffic Management or the learner’s place of employment (only if learner’s employer is a Qld accredited traffic control provider under TMR). Learners are required to attend placement hours and complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours within the timeframe specified in the Placement Contract (currently 90 days from course commencement). Final Assessment: A final assessment by AATC of the learner’s knowledge and skills regarding stop/slow and related duties will be completed after the completion of the minimum 20 hours of practical placement. This consists of an AATC assessor asking the learner a series of questions about stop/slow and related information, some scenarios which the learner may come across onsite, and a demonstration by the learner of stop/slow on a road (at least 3 instances of stop/slow to be demonstrated to assessor). Further Notes on the Practical (Industry Placement) Some sites where you will be placed may have a company specific induction which will be required to be completed prior to the placement occurring. A copy of the induction must be forwarded to AATC before placement occurring. Learners must be prepared to be placed in the greater Southeast Qld region, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. However, AATC will always look to put a learner on a site that is closest to their residence. Practical placement hours will only be offered from Monday – Friday, during daylight hours. Where learners are placed with AATM for their practical placement (and have paid the appropriate fees to do this), AATC will supply a high-vis shirt, hard hat with brim and smoky coloured safety glasses to learners. Learners will keep these PPE items post course. There are some Personal Protective Equipment (PPE required to supply some of their own) for their placement, currently these items include steel-capped safety boots and long pants. Learners must have access to a handheld UHF radio (minimum 2 watt) & stop/slow bat prior to the minimum practical placement commencing. These items may be available for loan from AATC (subject to availability & payment of a refundable deposit). Please note, the deposit is non-refundable if the items are not returned to an AATC Depot: within 48 hours of a request by AATC or, within 48 hours of the end of the placement agreement or, the items have been damaged in any way. Refer to the ‘Traffic Control (TC)’ table and the ‘Additional fee information for the Traffic Control (TC) Course’ area under the ‘Fees, charges and refunds’ section for more information about loaning a stop/slow bat and/or a UHF radio. Where learners are placed with their own company for their practical placement it will be up to the learner and their employer to supply the correct PPE for their placements. A reminder that the learner’s employer must be a Qld accredited traffic control provider under TMR in order for the learner to be able to complete their practical placement with them. Alternatively, the learners company may have a traffic management company onsite who is registered which the learner will be placed with. AATC will still require the placement contract to be signed showing the company accepts all the terms and conditions of having the learner onsite completing practical placement. |

| Cost: $500 (AATC provides minimum 20hr placement) AATC provides minimum 20-hour placement & limited PPE*, TMR Ready Reckoner, AATC holds a $100 deposit for a loan of UHF radio & stop/slow bat if the learner does not have their own, subject to availability of items. A licence fee including criminal history check is also payable to TMR, fees are found here. *PPE provided – hard hat, brim, basic safety glasses, high visibility shirt |
| Cost: $400 (Learner’s employer provides minimum 20hr placement) Learner’s employer provides minimum 20-hour placement with a competent person & also supplies necessary PPE, workplace insurance, UHF radio and stop/slow bat. Learner must be placed with a competent person who works for a QLD registered traffic management company. A licence fee including criminal history check is also payable to TMR, fees are found here. | Are there any other costs? |
| There is an additional fee (currently approximately $265) payable to the QLD Department (TMR) upon application for a three (3) year Traffic Controller Industry Authority (a base fee and a criminal history check fee – these costs are set by the QLD Dept TMR and are subject to change without notice. This is the licence fee mentioned above. Fees are found here. Limited PPE is given to New Entrant learners into the Traffic Control Course for their minimum 20-hour practical placement when they are completing their hours through AATC. This includes a hard hat with brim and neck shade, high-vis shirt and standard smokey coloured safety glasses. Learners completing their minimum 20-hour practical placement for the course will need to supply long dark work pants, steel-capped (ankle height, lace-up) boots, UHF radio (minimum 2 watts) and a stop/slow bat. AATC has a limited number of UHF radios and stop/slow bats which may be borrowed with a $100 deposit (refundable when the learner returns the borrowed item(s) in the same working order in which they received them). |
| What will I get at the end when I’ve passed? |
| On successful completion of the course including the theory, simulated practical experience, completion of a minimum 20 hours of onsite practical experience and the final assessment by a trainer from AATC, learners are issued with a Statement of Attainment in the following units: RIIWHS205E – Control Traffic with Stop/Slow Bat RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace Once learners receive their Statement of Attainment for the course they will have to apply at a TMR Customer Service Centre or via the Department of Transport and Main Roads QLD (TMR) website for a Traffic Control Industry Authority. Holding the below Units of Competency: RIIWHS205E – Control Traffic with Stop/Slow Bat RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace Is NOT considered a Traffic Control Licence (Industry Authority) in QLD. Learners MUST apply with TMR for a QLD Traffic Control Industry Authority and be approved by them, in addition to having the above Units of Competency, in order to complete any stop/slow duties on QLD roads. |
| Where is this valid for and how long is it valid? |
| Queensland and some other states depending on jurisdictional requirements. It is a requirement of the Department of Transport and Main Roads QLD (TMR) that traffic controllers renew their industry authority every 3 years. This is done by completing a renewal course and then reapplying for an industry authority with TMR. |

| How will I be assessed? |
| Learners must achieve a Satisfactory (S) outcome in both the theory and the practical components of the course to then be deemed Competent (C) and receive the award. The course will be made up of multi-choice questions, short answer questions, verbal questions, class discussions and practical components; Learners will need to demonstrate the use of stop/slow bats, positioning in relation to the travel path and satisfactory communication skills. Learners will sit through a presentation and complete relevant assessments for the topics covered in the course. The course will move gradually through the topics and assessments until it’s completion. At the end of the theory component a simulated practical exercise will take place with all learners demonstrating the use of a stop/slow bat, positioning in relation to the travel path and satisfactory communication skills. Learners will then be required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of onsite practical experience followed by participation in a final assessment of their stop/slow abilities with an AATC assessor. |
| What if I fail to get a Satisfactory (S) mark in all areas and get deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC)? |
Learners are given all reasonable trainer assistance to achieve a Competent (C) outcome on the day of the theory course, during their practical placement & at their final assessment, however:

| A completed enrolment form. A Unique Student Identifier (USI) – which is a federal government requirement. You can get a USI as part of your enrolment with AATC. A copy of a driver’s licence: learners must have held an approved driver's licence, either provisional or open, within the last 5 years (learner licences not accepted). |
