Who is this course for?

Traffic Controllers in Queensland who already hold a current Traffic Control Licence (Industry Authority)

What do I need to know before I enrol?
  • Learners must hold a current QLD traffic control industry authority or hold an equivalent licence from another Australian State

  • Learners must hold a General Construction Induction Card (White Card) or equivalent prior to enrolling in this course – for those who have lost their card, AATC White Card Course information can be found in AATC's Student Handbook.

  • Learners must have also held an approved driver's licence, either provisional or open, within the last 5 years.

  • Learners must have completed a minimum of 32 hours of stop/slow duties within the previous 12 months to the course date and prove this via a third party report

  • There are a number of medical requirements a traffic controller in QLD must continue to meet to renew their traffic controller industry authority, including a learner’s ability to stand, their eyesight and hearing. Read the linked documents in the ‘Further notes & additional information on pre-requisites’ section to make sure you still meet these criteria.

    If a learner has a criminal history, AATC is unable to advise the learner if they will be able to get a Traffic Controller Industry Authority as the final decision for this rests with TMR.

  • It is desirable that learners can communicate well and have sound literacy skills.

Please be advised TMR have several information sheets for people who are looking to complete the traffic control course. These information sheets describe certain prerequisites as required by TMR, that learners must meet in order to be eligible for a traffic control industry authority, after the successful completion of the whole course. We have placed links to them below for you to download and read.

What are the benefits of completing this course?

Successful learners will be able to continue working in the traffic management industry as a traffic controller who can do stop/slow.
Note: Learners who wish to put out signage and devices in QLD above those specific to stop/slow duties, would need to complete the Traffic Management Implementation Course as the Traffic Control Course only allows successful learners to place out signs specific to their role completing stop/slow. Learners needing to complete this course should see the ‘Traffic Management Implementation (New entrant)’ section for further information.

How will the course be delivered?

Face-to-face delivery
 
Theory:
The face-to-face theory is approximately eight (8) hours for both theoretical and simulated practical components. The assessment is open book and will be completed gradually throughout the day.
 
Third-Party Verification:
Third-Party Report to confirm a minimum of 32 hours of Stop/Slow in the past 12 months. (We also need a copy of your Supervisor’s TC and/or Driver’s License)
 
Further Notes on the Third Party Verification:
Learners will need to have a supervisor fill in page 2 of the third party report on their behalf with locations they’ve completed stop/slow. The supervisor will also need to  tick the boxes for what duties the learner completed on each site (site 1, 2 and 3).

Note: where a learner has been at the same site for an extended period of time (e.g., a year or more), supervisors can complete the third party report and list this site 3 times. However, the additional evidence supplied with the report would need to show 3 separate days where the learner was on site.
The third party report must be accompanied by additional evidence (risk assessments, signage sheets, dockets, pre-starts etc) for each of the sites listed. This demonstrates to AATC that the learner did attend the sites listed in the report, and what kind of set-up was operating on the day. A list of possible evidence learners can submit is listed below.

  1. Risk assessments showing the learners signature and site details matching the third party report

  2. Signage sheets / traffic guidance schemes (TGS) showing stop/slow and matching the locations listed on the learners third party report

  3. Dockets showing the learners name and site details matching the third party report, and showing what duties were performed

  4. Pre-starts which show the learner signed onto the site and evidence of a risk assessment taking place for the site

Note: If a TGS is supplied as evidence of stop/slow onsite AATC will require a docket, pre-start or risk assessment for each day to show the learner was on the site. 
 
Instances where a learner can supply proof of employment in traffic management, but not evidence of stop/slow as required by TMR for the renewal course, may require a learner to be placed on AATM sites to ensure proof of practical application.
 
Instances where a learner can supply limited proof of stop/slow, or where they cannot provide evidence of the full 32 hours, may require the learner to complete a challenge test with AATC.
 
A challenge test by AATC of the learner’s knowledge and skills regarding stop/slow and related duties can be completed after the completion of the theory component of the course. This consists of an AATC assessor asking the learner a series of questions about stop/slow and related information, some scenarios which the learner may come across onsite, and a demonstration by the learner of stop/slow.

As this challenge test is completed after the theory component, the learners would be required to stay behind for a longer period to have it completed as the AATC trainer/assessor will also need to complete the simulated practical exercise for ALL learners from the course as well.
 
A $50 fee will be charged for this challenge test (note learners should check AATC’s student handbook in the ‘Additional fees, charges and costs’ section for current pricing as it is subject to change from time-to-time.

How long will this course take?
  • Eight (8) hours (approx.) theory & simulated practical, face–to–face

  • Third Party Report (TPR) with evidence of 32 hours of stop/slow within the previous 12 months (completed by learner and their supervisor prior to attendance at course)

How much will it cost me?

Cost: $230 (Theory component $200 TMR "Ready Reckoner" Book $30) 

Instances where a learner can supply proof of employment in traffic management, but not evidence of stop/slow as required by TMR for the renewal course, may require a learner to be placed on AATM sites to ensure proof of practical application.

A fee will be charged for this of $50 per shift required (note learners should check AATC’s student handbook in the ‘Additional fees, charges and costs’ section for current pricing as it is subject to change from time-to-time).

Are there any other costs?

Note that for the Traffic Control courses there are additional fees charged by TMR for licences, criminal history checks etc. Fees for these can be found via TMR’s website, and will be payable to TMR, not AATC. 

For learners completing the Traffic Control Course as a Renewal, there will be a $30 charge for a Traffic Controller Ready Reckoner book supplied from TMR on top of the theory component cost. This is listed above and in the ‘Fees, charges and refunds’ section of the AATC Student Handbook).

If a learner completes the Traffic Control Course as a Renewal and brings with them some evidence of 32 hours of Stop/Slow in the last 12 months, but not for all 32 hours, AATC may ask for a challenge test to be completed. The cost of this will be $50 (note learners should check AATC’s student handbook in the ‘Additional fees, charges and costs’ section for current pricing as it is subject to change from time-to-time).
This is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on what evidence a learner provides.

If a learner completes the Traffic Control Course as a Renewal and can demonstrate employment in the traffic management industry but is finding it difficult to get evidence of stop/slow duties they’ve performed in the last 12 months, AATC may require the learner to complete some unpaid practical experience on a AATM site. The cost of this will be $50 per shift required, with a minimum of 2 shifts generally needed (note learners should check AATC’s student handbook in the ‘Additional fees, charges and costs’ section for current pricing as it is subject to change from time-to-time). This is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on what evidence a learner provides.

What will I get at the end when I’ve passed?

On successful completion of the course including the theory, simulated practical experience, and verification of the information on and evidence supplied with, the third party report by AATC, learners are issued with a Statement of Attainment in the following units:

Once learners receive their Statement of Attainment for the course they will have to apply at a TMR Customer Service Centre for a Traffic Control Industry Authority.


Holding only the below Units of Competency:

RIIWHS205E – Control Traffic with Stop/Slow Bat
RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace

Is NOT considered a Traffic Control Licence (Industry Authority) in QLD.

Learners MUST apply with TMR for a QLD Traffic Control Industry Authority and be approved by them, in addition to having the above Units of Competency, in order to complete any stop/slow duties on QLD roads.

Learners should receive an interim industry authority from TMR to work from whilst they wait for their physical card to come in the mail. However, this interim authority is at TMR’s discretion as any renewal learner who has let their industry authority expire before renewing may find that TMR will require them to go through a criminal history check; the same as new entrants go through.

It is strongly advised for learners to complete their traffic control renewal course a MINIMUM of 3 weeks prior to its expiry to allow for public holidays, processing time, and to allow the learner to gather any additional evidence for their third party report which may be required.

Where is this valid for and how long is it valid?

Queensland and some other states depending on jurisdictional requirements.
 
It is a requirement of the Department of Transport and Main Roads QLD (TMR) that traffic controllers renew their industry authority every 3 years. This is done by completing a renewal course and then reapplying for an industry authority with TMR.

How will I be assessed?

Learners must achieve a Satisfactory (S) outcome in both the theory and the practical components of the course to then be deemed Competent (C) and receive the award.

The course will be made up of multi-choice questions, short answer questions, verbal questions, class discussions and practical components; Learners will need to demonstrate the use of stop/slow bats, positioning in relation to the travel path and satisfactory communication skills.

Learners will sit through a presentation and complete relevant assessments for the topics covered in the course. The course will move gradually through the topics and assessments until it’s completion.

At the end of the theory component a simulated practical exercise will take place with all learners demonstrating the use of a stop/slow bat, positioning in relation to the travel path and satisfactory communication skills.

Renewal learners will then have their third party report and the evidence attached with it assessed by AATC.

What if I fail to get a Satisfactory (S) mark in all areas and get deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC)?

Learners are given all reasonable trainer assistance to achieve a Competent (C) outcome on the day of the theory course, during their practical placement & at their final assessment, however:

  • If the learner fails to gain a Competent (C) outcome with reasonable trainer assistance then they will be deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC),

  • The learner will not be issued the award and will be required to re-enrol at their own expense and successfully complete all areas of the course again (including practical components) should they wish to receive the award.

What is required to commence an enrolment?

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) – which is a federal government requirement.
