The course CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry is aimed at any person who intends to work in construction.
It is the general course which goes through hazards, risks, PPE etc. which people are likely to come into contact with upon working at a construction site.

What do I need to know before I enrol?
- Learners should be able to communicate well and have sound literacy skills
- Learners must supply AATC with three (3) Evidence of Identity (EOI) documents – a list of what can be provided can be found in the ‘Further notes & additional information on prerequisites’ section
There are specific identification requirements for this course which are listed below. Evidence of identity (EOI) documents must be made up of three matching original EOI documents. The three documents can be made up of: One (1) category A two (2) category B OR Two (2) category A one (1) category B At least one category A document must be photographic and show a full name and date of birth (DOB). | |

What are the benefits of completing this course?
Successful learners will be able to seek work in the traffic management industry as a traffic controller who can do stop/slow.
Note: Learners who wish to put out signage and devices in QLD above those specific to stop/slow duties, would need to complete the Traffic Management Implementation Course as the Traffic Control Course only allows successful learners to place out signs specific to their role completing stop/slow.
Course delivery, timeframes and costs
How will the course be delivered?
Theory:
The face-to-face theory is approximately six (6) – seven (7) hours for both theoretical and practical components. The assessment is open book and will be completed gradually throughout the day.
Practical (Demonstration by learner, use of Personal Protective Equipment [PPE]):
Learners must demonstrate to the trainer the use of some items of PPE including head protection, eye protection, hearing protection and a high vis garment.
How long will this course take?
Six (6) – seven (7) hours (approx.) theory & practical, face–to–face
What will I learn?
What will I learn?
- Identify health and safety legislative requirements of construction work.
- Identify construction hazards and risk control measures.
- Identify health and safety communication and reporting processes.
- Identify incident and emergency response procedures.
How will I be assessed?
Learners must achieve a Satisfactory (S) outcome in both the theory and the practical components of the course to then be deemed Competent (C) and receive the award.
The course will be made up of multi-choice questions, short answer questions, verbal questions, class discussions and a practical component where learners will need to demonstrate the use of some items of PPE.
Learners will sit through a presentation and complete relevant assessments for the topics covered in the course. The course will move gradually through the topics and assessments until it’s completion.
What if I fail to get a Satisfactory (S) mark in all areas and get deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC)?
Learners are given all reasonable trainer assistance to achieve a Competent (C) outcome on the day of the course, however:
- If the learner fails to gain a Competent (C) outcome with reasonable trainer assistance then they will be deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC),
- The learner will not be issued the award and will be required to re-enrol at their own expense and successfully complete all areas of the course again should they wish to receive the award.
What do I get when I am successful in the course?
What will I get at the end when I’ve passed?
On successful completion of the course including the theory and practical exercise, learners are issued with a Statement of Attainment in the following unit:
CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry.
Learners will also receive a laminated wallet size white card, which the learner will be required to sign prior to lamination.
Where is this valid for and how long is it valid?
All over Australia.
Once you have completed the course it is not necessary to renew your white card, unless, you lose the card, have not worked in the construction industry for 2 years or more, or, there is a legislative requirement to do so.

A completed enrolment form.
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) – which is a federal government requirement.
